Hi James,
I have read the everyman saga ,which I loved, and now about to start book 4 of shifting tides. I was wondering when the audio book will become available? I have text to speech on my device, but it is just not the same. I love to voice actor you have , and it enhance the experience. Hopefully it is out soon ๐
Golden Age was the first of your books that I read. Not the sort of book I would normally read, and it took a while to get into it, but after a few chapters… I was hooked. Soon followed-up with Silver Road, then Copper Chain and I have just started Iron Will. Love the series!
I agree with Jaclyn, should be a TV Series.
I’m wondering if there will be another series once the current one ends and if so will it take place in either of the worlds you have written about. I absolutely love your work by the way.
Hi Mike, there certainly will be. The next series is going to be something different again, but with many of the elements that you’ll find familiar. It’s definitely going to be epic. It’s definitely going to be fantastical. I’m very excited about it ๐
I have recently read your Lore of the Evermen series and I have a question. In the series, you have the two substances, essence and elixir ,which are made from luddite during a complex refining process. Does essence represent crude oil, a.k.a petroleum, and elixir represent the money and power associated with it?
Great question, Maeve! To an certain extent, essence does represent oil – or any mineral or substance that powers the world economy. In the Bronze Age it was tin. In the Industrial Age it was coal. If we’re talking metaphors, elixir represents addiction, particularly the subtle (or not so subtle) addiction to power and wealth.
I have just finished the Evermen saga and it was a fantastic read, with a gripping story and fantastic character’s. Cant wait to start The Shifting tides series.
I’m a huge fan and absolutely love the way that you write, it’s magic.
Devoured the Evermen Sagas, loved every minute! The Shifting Tides is just as amazing if not more so. How many books will be in this series? I need book 4 ASAP!
Why hasn’t this been these been picked up for a TV series or movies?
Hi Jaclyn,
Thanks for your kinds words! There will be four books in the Shifting Tides series, with book 4, Iron Will, coming out in January 2018.
A TV series or film would be great… we’ll see!
I am halfway through the evermen saga and I must say it is one of the finest fantasy works I have ever come across. In the last few years I have lost a lot of love for reading but this series had rejuvenated my passion to read completely. I look forward to reading and work you have put out and any more that will hopefully come out in the future. Hopefully another little taste from the evermen saga
Hello James. I admire the patience and creativity it takes to write good fantasy novels – nicely done. I recently discovered this saga; I just finished book four, I really enjoyed the series. I work my *** off all week at an executive level job and I can’t tell you the peace I get when I am able to escape to magical realms with chivalrous, handsome heros (trust me, they are gorgeous) and battles against evil. One question… did I miss what happened to the tainted essence that seeped out the pool? Where did it go? I listen to audio books when I travel, so when traffic gets interesting I sometimes miss a piece. Or, is that one of those mysteries that may come up in some future writing?
Hi Deanna. That’s a great question! We know the essence could melt stone, so it burrowed its way into the ground. I suppose that could have been clearer ๐
Well, what a fantastic saga! I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed reading every moment of the books and it’s a shame that it’s over (perhaps there could be more – I’d love to find out what happened during the dawn of the Evermen or the future of Merralya after the defeat of Sentar?).
Every aspect of the saga was brilliantly thought out and executed, resulting in a fantastically detailed world whereby I can visualise every part. I need to get myself a poster of the world map on my wall.
I even have some music playing along in my head which fits the mood perfectly; I’d love to see this as a film/TV show one day.
On to the Shifting Tides series next, cannot wait!
Keep up the great work and I hope there’s plenty more great books to come!
This series reminds me a lot of Sumerian mythology. Was that deliberate? The Sumerian King list with its fantastically long reign lengths = the Evermen, etc.
It’s also interesting that evidence of a Sumerian presence has been found in America, dating to the Ur III period. Inspiration for the continent across the sea, perhaps?
Anyway, it does look like you’ve more or less written yourself into a corner since the Lord of the Night’s revenant army would quickly decay if they stay in warmer lands for too long — so he’d be forced to take them back north and somehow construct ships big enough to cross the ocean, in lands with climes not terribly suited to ship construction. Plus, likely without the knowhow of the Emirald in ship construction, that might prove doubly difficult.
Wouldn’t it make more sense for Miro and the Commodore to head back to the continent to face the Lord of the Night, before the armies of the Empire lose their edge after going too long w/o a major battle?
Hi Damon, cool info, thanks! I’m assuming you’ve just read The Path of the Storm, because you’ve guessed some of the things in The Lore of the Evermen quite well I must say ๐

I had stopped reading for a while, but decided to try the Golden Age and I couldn’t put the book down! Silver Road continued my journey with your story and characters. Thank you for creating such a wonderful experience for me to follow with you. I can’t wait for the next book in the series!
5 out of 5 stars. I Just finished all four books of your Everyman series in less than two weeks. Enchantress was sitting in my Kindle Unlimited queue for a long time, but once I started reading it, I had o keppgoing with the series and ended up buying them to read again. I’m not usually much of an audiobook fan either but I was wishing for traffic jams to listen longer on my daily commute. The narrator also did a fantastic job of bringing your characters to life. What a captivating series and I loved the surprise twist at the end. I hope that you come back to this series at some point. I would love to hear more about Ella and Miro and all of their friends to see how their life is after the end of this series. Is there any chance of a movie series coming out?
I’m looking forward to reading your other series too and will be starting it soon.
Thanks for reaching out Jenn and for your warm words. Something on screen would be great fun. I might come back to the Evermen Saga at some point, but for now the Shifting Tides awaits…
The first war sounds great. I’d like to see something about just Killian and Ella, and what they learn from Evrin’s books. I’ve been a devourer of fantasy novels since 1991, I was 12, recovering from a brain tumor ,unable to do much else. Your Evermen saga is one of my favorites. I compare with the likes of Terry Brooks and Robert Jordan, which means that I hold it in the highest esteem.
Tolkien will always be the master of course.
Thank you for such a wonderful saga. I am again in a position where reading is the place I spend most of my as I wait for a liver transplant.
I really enjoyed them and got through the books really quickly.
Its a great world you have created and there is so much scope for you to keep going with it.
An Everman Origans story?
A world pre Evermen?
Explore the “hidden” continent and some of the politics you touched on there?
So many sotorys waiting to be told.
I couldn’t agree more – so many stories waiting to be told! I think the idea I’m most keen to pursue is the story of the original war between the humans and the Evermen. Watch this space…

Just about to start the last book, really love this series, the depth of the characters is great! I love the different character perspectives, I’ll be gutted when I finish. I hope you get the opportunity to make it a film!

Hi James! I’m almost finished with book 1 of evermen saga and I love it! I regretfully admit I was thinking about quitting after the first few chapters because I thought it was going slow. My apologies, maybe I’m getting cranky in my old age. Now I can’t put this book down. The world, the story, the characters, the magic system, the politics, I find it all fascinating, very well put together and thoroughly entertaining. I like the map because it helps me follow them along (they desperately need Uber). You should be ashamed of yourself for taking away so much of my time but I can’t help myself. Now I have to buy all the other books! I was in the middle of the Shannara series and you jumped the line somehow ๐ Keep up the good work and God bless you.
Thanks so much Berdando, what a wonderful comment to read. It was interesting writing a fantasy series without horses (well they have horses later from the desert people but you know what I mean) – with a world-spanning adventure to complete, there was definitely a lot of walking involved!
Do you accept prerelease readers to provide a review for your books? I have just finished the 3rd book of the Evermen series, read The Golden Age and saw that you have The Silver Road, book two of the Shifting Tides series coming out in November 2016. I am a registered reviewer on Amazon, written several reviews and am inquiring if you receive the above-mentioned position. I thoroughly enjoy your style and creativity and would love to provide you with an honest, heart felt review of The Silver Road. Please see my contact information below and I hope to hear from you regarding this matter.
The way you wrote these novels had me laughing, crying, and rooting for the good guys! I never guessed what came next which is really amazing since most books these days always start and finish the same. I really hope you continue the Everman series! It has definitely been the BEST series I’ve read in a long time! I hope to see more soon!
Thanks Molly! I think the fourth book was the hardest to write because I wanted every character we’d met throughout the series to play a major part, but for the same reason that also made it the most fulfilling. More books coming!
I have just read the first of the evermen saga. Your writing style and detail is absolutely breathtaking. I start the second book tomorrow and cannot wait. Your depth of detail draws me into the story. I only wish that I could here the singing blades in real life. They were so beautifully detailed in your writing that I was expecting to hear singing in my head. Thank you for sharing your amazing talent with the world.
Thanks Rachel. Singing to swords was a difficult thing to pull off but I think somehow it worked! Hope you enjoyed the rest of the series. All the best, James
Yes this map has come in very handy indeed. I finished the series a couple of weeks after writing this, and I came to this page often to get my bearings. Have you done one with the whole world? That would be great to see as well.
I have personal notes that I used while writing and a sketch map for the new continent across the sea, but I don’t have a full rendition. A lot of work went into the main Evermen Saga map!
James, LOVE the maps. I am very serious about this question: who did you get to make your maps? I am desperate need of a mapmaker of my novel. Any advice you can throw my way is appreciated.
Hi Scott, I sat down with a good friend of mine who’s a great graphic designer to make the map. I can forward him your request if you contact me through my web site.

Listening to “The Hidden Relic” Book 2 in the series now, Glad I finally got into the series. I had Book 1 for awhile on my kindle and just added it to my audible and listened to it on my Echo, Love the series so far. The one draw back on Audible is no maps, so I am glad I found this when i looked for a map of the world online. Thanks

You have a stone sentinel strolling the countryside, people getting married and aving heirs, and a bunch of Evermen still in stasis on another world. Perfect sequel stuff!
That is so awesome to hear. Just finished book one. I have to wait for a check to clear over the weekend to get book two. Pure and wretched torture. Thank you.
I have read all of your books many times over now and they are one of my all time favourite series! Please bring out more to the series, they are amazing! I’ve never became so engrossed in a book, reading for hours on end! I’ve fallen in love with all of the characters! I’m a huge fan and it would be amazing if the books were made into films aswell! All the best for the future.
Dear James,
I absolutely love the Everman Saga, it is unputdownable! ๐ the story is so compelling, the characters unforgettable. I live in London too and thanks to my daily commute I read about 2-3 books a week, so I have definitely read a lot, but his story is by far my favourite. I missed my stop on the tube so many times as I was deep in the world of Merralya with Ella and Miro, I now lost count. Thank you for creating such a wonderful world for us readers and PLEASE, PLEASE work on the film or series version! And in the meantime if you see a girl around town bumping into strangers as she cant keep her nose out of her kindle, that is me, re-reading your story. ๐ All the best!

like the evermen saga alot
im glad you dont get bogged down with details and loads of fact’s that make no difference.
I have already pictured the film in my head, shame i im not capable ๐
I will look out for the next book.
Hi James,
Just finished your 4 books, superb from start to finish. You have a real talent, you seem to fuse the ability to portray locations of a Wilbur Smith with the storytelling of David Gemmell.
Seeing as a new book isn’t available now, what would you recommend to keep me busy till your next publication?
Dan – you just named two of my all time favourite authors! David Gemmell and Wilbur Smith’s books have such wonderful pacing and the vivid descriptions never slow down the action, something I’ve always tried to emulate. Both authors also never bought into writing interminable series – endings are always conclusive and satisfying.
If you’re up for something in fantasy check out Lyonesse by Jack Vance. In epic science fiction you can’t go wrong with Peter F. Hamilton’s books. And in action and adventure / historical, Ken Follett’s a master.
Just read the evermen saga and couldnt put them down. Absolutely brilliant writing. I felt I was right there with them and didn’t want to leave. Like previous readers I would love to know what happens next…… and yes it would be amazing on the big screen.can’t wait for your next book, keep up the excellent escapism โบโบ

The best books I have read since reading John Twelve Hawks Fourth Realm Trilogy. The writing style and depth of characters has kept me fully entertained from start to end.
I am in love with your novels! I have reread them several times and persuaded my family and friends to read them too. I particularly love that on one hand there is simplicity in that you’ve chosen a handful of characters to focus on but at the same time there is such complexity in the detailing of the world you have created. You’ve painted such a vivid picture of this world and the different houses and lore and so on. All the characters are real and brought to life. I think this could make an incredible TV series like Game of Thrones one day.
Burned through the entire series, absolutely enjoyed them! Was glad I only discovered it on kindle after book 4 was released…finished it all in less than a week! Keep up the great work!
I loved the books! The story lines drew me in and kept me on the edge of my seat. I actually put off dinner several times, telling my children we’d have to wait…there’s a war going on! Wonderful writing! The audiobooks were fantastic as well.
I agree with Bharathi!!! I just finished the Saga. I am so sad it is over. Please make a 5th book!!! I really want to see Ella and Killian’s children. It would be so cool also to see Tomas get older, see Rogan reunite with Ella, discover what other secrets of lore Ella can find. I want to know their futures!!! It would be really cool to see the other Evermen try to come back at some point!!! Sorry for all the exclamation points, I am just so in love with the saga. To find books that I can get into this much is so wonderful. Reading the last book was very bittersweet. I think I might try and put together images of people I think could look like the characters.
Seriously, these are great. I hope to read more of your books! Amazing work!
Book Five, Six, Seven? Please?!?!?! Just finished the fourth book. The series was a great read and I really hope we will get to read more of this great world. Thanks Mr. Maxwell!
Thanks Jason! I never wanted to write a series that never ended, so I’m pleased to wrap things up with Book 4. It’s also good because also frees me to write another series in the same world one day – we’ll see!
Hi! I’ve never been one for long drawn out endings (as you’ve probably noticed) but yes, the series is finished. I tried to make every character, no matter how large or small, have a story to tell, so that we know what they’re up to now. Also, yes, there will be more books.

I have just finished book four after reading the series in a week. I was up till 5.30am! My family are enjoying them too – my mum was harassing me the other night to download it onto her Kindle which is praise indeed! I have loved them and spent a lot of today thinking about the series. My book recommendations have begun in earnest!
I have read just about every major fantasy series out there. I greatly enjoyed this one and would place it right up there with the better ones. What is the plan for the series after book 4?
missy whitehairFebruary 14, 2015 at 9:55 pm . Permalink
Amazing series. So completely out of the realm of what I normally read but “wow”. This story captivates you to the point of not accomplishing anything useful in a day because you have to keep going back to continue reading. There are very few books that I think should be turned into movies but this series would be incredible.

I purchased Enchantress January 13, 2015 and just finished the fourth and final book to the series last night. Your Evermen books are amazing! Once I read Enchantress I was hooked. My imagination soared with all the details of landscape, characters and battle scenes. You are truly a genius. When will we see more books from you? I can’t wait to read more of your work.
James….just started reading Enchantress after looking for that void to be filled after “The eye of the World” books. I have to say your book is very impressive and I am looking forward to the rest of the series. Keep up the good work
Hi Vincent, I updated the map from book to book, so that new features (e.g. Ku Kara) become visible as the reader moves through the series. Is there something that you wanted to find but didn’t? All the best, James
Is there a map where you can see the lands across the sea? I only see the main continent. I listened to the book and only have the map online on this site, so there may be something more in the hard copy books.
It’s true there isn’t a map of the lands across the sea, mainly because it was unknown to the people of the Empire and that’s the origin of the map in the book (from various archives e.g. the Academy of Enchanters). Great query! Take care, James

I didn’t think it would get any better after reading George R R Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire series, but it has! You have that Tolkien-esque knack of picking exactly the right word for every occasion e.g. “seditious” to describe Bastian. It almost reads itself and now I’m on Book 4, it actually does with the audio book! Many congrats James, I’m a middle-aged bloke and it’s just as good for me as it is for the younger readers. My only complaint is that I’m missing sleep and ignoring my family because I’m devouring it too fast!
I like the idea of an audio book ‘reading-itself’ – quite clever, you got a chuckle out of me! Hope you enjoy the conclusion and thanks for writing in!
James, what four great books. Just loved them. Read the four all one after another as I was having sleepless nights thinking about the characters and the paths they had to take.
I agree with Bharathi these would make great movies easily to compete with HP, TLOR and the Hobbit. With a uniqueness that people would welcome. I really hope it would happen. Although screening these books will never equal the books, but it would be really great to see how the big machine of film making would make of all the lore machines and weapons.
Really looking forward to whatever comes in your next book. Can you tell us when that might be?
Loved the books James just finishing the last one and I shall miss the realm of Merralya and Miro and Ella, write some more please. I’m trying to slow down so I don’t finish it. I agree with the above a film would be epic! Thank you.
Hi Annie, unfortunately iBooks won’t publish books by my publisher, 47North, which is an imprint of Amazon Publishing. However you can pick up the paperbacks from Amazon or The Book Depository without a hitch. Thanks for writing in!
I am so glad I read your books. I read all 4 and the short stories in a week. I could not put them down. Now I can sleep. I hold you responsible for a week devoid of sleep. Ella rocks but she had me frustrated regarding Killan. Shani is amazing. Dain and Rogan are legendary and Miro….oh Miro. More please. I love this world you have built, and I hope this is not the last we will see of it.
I have just finished the whole saga, I loved every book!! Do you think there will be any more, don’t feel like I am quite ready to leave Ella and Killian quite yet!! And Miro, Amber, Tomas!! Please say there will be more!!……………..
I have finished the enchantress and the hidden relic, now half way through the path of storm. Thank you, your books are amazing. I never felt I could read such fantasy books especially the ones like Harry Potter, LOTR, the likes, but your books are so full of mystery and enchantment, I am unable to put them down or stop thinking/dream about them. Please, please, please, you should convert them into movies. I want to see Rogan Jarvis, the desert Prince, Ella, Miro, Crystal palace, stone water, the rune bridge………….everything
Thanks Bharathi, I’m so glad to hear you’re enjoying the series. It gives me a lot of motivation to read comments like yours and know that the books are bringing joy to people’s lives. Let’s start working on Hollywood to make a movie or a tv series – I’d love to travel through the portal and see the shattered world of Shar on screen ๐

Thanks Ella – I like your name by the way, reminds me of a certain Enchantress… ๐
Thanks
I thought people might like the larger version but never thought that it could be needed for Audible – glad it was useful!
You have a stone sentinel strolling the countryside, people getting married and aving heirs, and a bunch of Evermen still in stasis on another world. Perfect sequel stuff!
That made me chuckle – very true! Couldn’t bring myself to wrap up *everything*, then we’d have no reason to return one day!
That is so awesome to hear. Just finished book one. I have to wait for a check to clear over the weekend to get book two. Pure and wretched torture. Thank you.
Hope you enjoyed the rest of the series!
Thanks Ashlee that’s really kind of you to say. Movies would certainly be fun!
Dear James,
I absolutely love the Everman Saga, it is unputdownable!
What a wonderful thing to say – thanks Veronika, you’ve made my day!
like the evermen saga alot
im glad you dont get bogged down with details and loads of fact’s that make no difference.
I have already pictured the film in my head, shame i im not capable ๐
I will look out for the next book.
Picked these up on Amazon not knowing what to expect and it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made in a long.
Hooked from start to finish and I’m definitely going to miss visiting The Tingaran Empire.
Would love for you to revisit one day – definitely a few twists and paths to follow.
Thanks again, superb series.
Thanks Laurence, very generous of you to say ๐
Just finished books 1-3 and am now about to start 4. Thank you for writing such wonderful books and please keep writing!
Thanks for your kind words, I’m certainly going to keep writing for as long as people keep reading!
Hi James,
Just finished your 4 books, superb from start to finish.
Very kind words, Kath, thank you! I’ll be announcing a new book soon ๐
The best books I have read since reading John Twelve Hawks Fourth Realm Trilogy. The writing style and depth of characters has kept me fully entertained from start to end.
Thanks Phil!
Hi James,
Loved the books couldn’t put them down! What’s next? I’m ready for another of your adventures!
The next adventure isn’t far away now – I’m going to reveal it soon ๐
I am in love with your novels! I have reread them several times and persuaded my family and friends to read them too. I particularly love that on one hand there is simplicity in that you’ve chosen a handful of characters to focus on but at the same time there is such complexity in the detailing of the world you have created. You’ve painted such a vivid picture of this world and the different houses and lore and so on. All the characters are real and brought to life. I think this could make an incredible TV series like Game of Thrones one day.
Looking forward to your future work!
That’s a really thoughtful comment, thanks very much for saying so, Anya.
When is the 5th everman book coming out.
I’m not ruling out writing more books in the world of the Evermen Saga, but the fourth book does wrap up that particular tale ๐
Hi James,
Burned through the entire series, absolutely enjoyed them! Was glad I only discovered it on kindle after book 4 was released…finished it all in less than a week! Keep up the great work!
Would love to know what’s next?
I’m going to send out some details of my new book soon – make sure you sign up for the newsletter!
All the best,
James
I loved the books! The story lines drew me in and kept me on the edge of my seat. I actually put off dinner several times, telling my children we’d have to wait…there’s a war going on! Wonderful writing! The audiobooks were fantastic as well.
The narrator of the audio books was wonderful to work with – a true professional. I’m really glad to hear you enjoyed the series.
I am looking for The Empire Reborn and can’t find it anywhere
Try looking for The Lore of the Evermen (The Evermen Saga, Book 4) – I think that might be what you’re after. Thanks for writing in!
Thanks Nichole! That’s really kind of you to say. I do think those characters have more stories to tell…
I loved your books so much! Ive just finished the final book and I am wanting more books off you ๐
Will you be writing more ?
Definitely. I have a new book coming out soon – watch this space!
Is the a 5th book planned? I just finished the series and never want to let the characters go! ๐
And I’m confused about Rogan!!
No fifth book planned at the moment – but that doesn’t mean we won’t hear from the characters and world again ๐
Hello James,
is the Evermen Saga finished or will their more books?
Hi! I’ve never been one for long drawn out endings (as you’ve probably noticed) but yes, the series is finished. I tried to make every character, no matter how large or small, have a story to tell, so that we know what they’re up to now. Also, yes, there will be more books.
These books are awesome! I finished them all. Will there be movies? What other books are you cooking up? I’m highly interested in what’s next.
A movie or a TV series would be fun – I’m keen if the studios are!
I’m working on something quite different from the Evermen Saga, but still fantasy. The first book will be out soon. Watch this space.
When is book 5 coming?
Book 4 marks the end of that particular tale – but there’ll be more stories to come ๐
I have just finished book four after reading the series in a week. I was up till 5.30am! My family are enjoying them too – my mum was harassing me the other night to download it onto her Kindle which is praise indeed! I have loved them and spent a lot of today thinking about the series. My book recommendations have begun in earnest!
Kind praise indeed! – thanks for writing in, and also for passing the word to your friends and family ๐
I have read just about every major fantasy series out there. I greatly enjoyed this one and would place it right up there with the better ones. What is the plan for the series after book 4?
I’m going to leave that world for a while, but I have no doubt I’ll come back to it at some point. Thanks for your kind words!
Amazing series. So completely out of the realm of what I normally read but “wow”. This story captivates you to the point of not accomplishing anything useful in a day because you have to keep going back to continue reading. There are very few books that I think should be turned into movies but this series would be incredible.
If a studio approaches me, I won’t say no ๐
I purchased Enchantress January 13, 2015 and just finished the fourth and final book to the series last night. Your Evermen books are amazing! Once I read Enchantress I was hooked. My imagination soared with all the details of landscape, characters and battle scenes. You are truly a genius. When will we see more books from you? I can’t wait to read more of your work.
I’ll have a new book out soon, in a different world but still stocked with plenty of action and adventure. Keep an eye out!
James….just started reading Enchantress after looking for that void to be filled after “The eye of the World” books. I have to say your book is very impressive and I am looking forward to the rest of the series. Keep up the good work
Will do my best!
I’m in the process of reading book 3 now and it would be nice to have an updated map.
I’m think the special effects would need to be top notch – there’s a decent amount of magic in there!
The next book’s going to be something a little different, but still nice and thick, with plenty of action and adventure.
All the best,
James
Loved the books James just finishing the last one and I shall miss the realm of Merralya and Miro and Ella, write some more please. I’m trying to slow down so I don’t finish it. I agree with the above a film would be epic! Thank you.
I think it’s great that everyone wants a film – including me – Hollywood or HBO where are you?
I have the first 3 books on iBooks and was waiting for the 4th one to come out. Why are your books no longer available on iBooks?
The best thing about the world is that it now exists – it’s brought to life in so many people’s minds. I love that thought.
I have just finished the whole saga, I loved every book!! Do you think there will be any more, don’t feel like I am quite ready to leave Ella and Killian quite yet!! And Miro, Amber, Tomas!! Please say there will be more!!……………..
I’m going to leave the world for a time but it’s definitely a place to return to. I’ll keep on writing, count on that!
When is the next book coming out?
Book Four, The Lore of the Evermen, will be out on 26 August 2014, but you can pre-order now ๐
